NEWSLETTER 17
Bali August – October 2011
The visit to
Bali from August to October this year was a very happy and successful one in that we caught up with a lot of
people that receive Peduli Bali support. The welcomes and grateful
thanks we received were worth every cent that you gave so generously with donations and through assistance to
fundraise.
Seraya
School and Village
First we
gave out food aid to families of the sponsor children and from there to the school where we were greeted by over
100 very excited children. We handed out each student a school
pack, food box, shoes and socks. Check out all the smiles on the
childrens’ faces.
Food Aid
parcels
On the trip
to Seraya we caught up with the family who have a blind baby and gave them a food parcel. Unfortunately the baby’s follow up revealed permanent damage to
his sight and because of his degree of disablement we are unable to
assist other than food parcels. A happy and extremely grateful
family with a very captivating baby!
Continued on
to Tumbu where we gave out food parcels and clothing for the people of that village. We caught up with Putu and Gede our sponsor children and gave food parcels for
their families. Putu has just completed his fourth year in senior school and is going extremely well with his
studies.
Trisna, a 13
year old girl from Gianyar Village
We took
Trisna down to the John Fawcett doctor. She has very bad scholiosis and other medical conditions. The doctor has
referred her to an orthopaedic surgeon at a local hospital. We took
Trisna to the hospital a week later and he referred her to a professor who is coming down from
Surabaya, a top orthopaedic surgeon. We went to visit the professor the day before we left for home at the
Sanglah hospital where they held a case conference for
her. More blood tests and x-rays were ordered. This was to be done the
week after we came home and we are still awaiting the results of these tests.
Tampak
Saring
We went to
the Senang Hati Foundation for the disabled. We took food aid,
swimming noodles, towels and bed linen. While we were there we
watched some small children receiving therapy and it was just an incredible experience to see the work that is
done for these people.
Renon
We took a
group of 20 people to visit the Elisama Orphanage and gave out food
aid and some of the group made up 50 bags of ‘goodies’ to give to each child. They also received school packs.
A great afternoon as our group included a few families with children. We all joined in games and sing-songs with the children from the Orphanage and
had a very memorable time. It was sad to leave them
all.
Ubud
A small
group of us went to the Bumi Sehat birthing centre and I enjoyed a long chat with Robyn Lim. Robyn has just returned to Ubud after some very successful fund-raising here
in Warnbro and Mandurah. We took some bags of baby rugs and
clothes. With donations from friends we were able to buy toilet
rolls, sanitary pads and baby’s nappies. We took up disposable
nappies but Robyn prefers cloth nappies and if any body has any nappies or fabric suitable to make nappies
please let me have it so we can take it to her. There were four new
babies and we gave each mother a baby pack and siblings were given a school pack.
McDonald’s Party
We took 40
children from a local orphanage to a McDonald’s party donated by Hazel. About 12 of us had a most enjoyable evening playing games with the
children. The language is never a barrier in chatting with
these children - a great night was had by all. This was the first time Peduli had participated with this orphanage [chosen by
Tanto].
Peguyangan
Village
We watched a
group of young children do the traditional Barong dance which was a
delightful treat.
We met with
50 children from the village and each child was presented with a sealed envelope containing an amount to pay their school fees.
These children come from very poor families. We also gave them a
school pack and a t/shirt. This village was chosen by Gusdek and
Senny.
Bangli-Tembuku
Village
This was our
first visit to this village. We gave out 100 food packs to the
older poorest members of this village and also gave out t/shirts and caps. At this village we also were greeted by 80 school children who had made banana
leaf Offering Baskets to show us what they do. We gave all the
children a school pack.
Singaraja – Old People’s
Home
A small
group of us went around all the residents in the home and left food aid for them. Lots of smiles all round. These
residents really touch the heart.
Lovinia
Visited
Elisama Orphanage – great to see the children again. We had a
sing-song, lots of laughs. Gave all the children a school pack and
hat also left a large bag of clothing for the children and some food aid.
Gianyar
Tom and I were picked up by
Murdika from the John Fawcett Foundation and taken to the village to visit our sponsor children
[twins]. We left a bag of food and clothing for the
family. There were two small young girls and we gave them each a
Monique doll. We took with us extra
school packs which we shared with the children in the village.

Peduli
Float
We still
maintain a float in Bali to assist families where necessary. We
again helped Siwi to buy medication for her father. We also helped
two local families in Sanur with food aid.
Projects for
2011/2012
Peduli Bali Scholarship
Program –
We have
fulfilled our sponsors for the current year and are now taking ‘expressions of interest’ for the year
2012/2013. Each student requires $200 per year for five years for
their senior schooling. This money is to cover school fees, books
and in part, their school uniform. If you know of any interested
potential sponsors please refer them on to us.
The John
Fawcett Foundation
We delivered
another bag of 80 Peduli trauma teddies and also left a bag of Christmas t-shirts for the staff to wear at Christmastime. While we were there, there was a doctor visiting from South Australia
Pre-operation check for children undergoing a cleft lip and pallet
operation. We were delighted to be able to give all the children a
Peduli bear. It was great to be able to ‘hand-deliver’ our Peduli
trauma teddies in person to these children.
We also went
with a large group of Foundation staff to conduct eye screening in
Gianyar – some people were operated on for cataracts that day as there were two mobile vans
operating. After leaving we called in to the Ganesha hospital as
this is where the children for cleft lip and pallet were to be operated on. We were able to see the first child come out of theatre. It is amazing the work that is being done to restore these children’s
lives and for Peduli Bali to play a small part.
Peduli Bear
Project
Speaking of
trauma teddies, we still need interested knitters to keep on knitting! As you can see, these
teddies are for a great cause and are so well received by the
children. If you know of any knitters, please invite them to
make some teddies for us.
Shoes and Socks
Project
Again this
year, 130 school children from Seraya Village Primary School were each given a pair of shoes and
socks. This continues to be a very successful project and we are hopeful of continuing it next
year. At our Christmas morning tea we will be floating the idea of
a gifting card for anyone wishing to donate a ‘gifting on’ pair of
shoes and socks, still at $10. It is amazing to think that this $10
buys a pair of sturdy Bata shoes and a pair of socks. Excellent
value. Donations for this project will run continuously for
the coming year and is organised in Bali by Tanto with each child’s name and shoe size given to the Bata store
where they are boxed and named and put into classroom crates ready for distribution by us when we
visit. Each child is then called to the front of the class to
receive their box, shake your hand and reward you with a huge smile. If you would like a photo of your donation from your gift card [which is
included in the shoe box], please let us know.

·
To our trusted friends Sudana and Tanto, Gusdek and Senny our heartfelt thanks as you all once again
assisted with the purchasing of food aid for the
villages. These packs were distributed to over 200 families in
total and all put together by these wonderful people.
To our own
families and friends who give us their continuing support we thank you sincerely. We also thank our business associates and everyone who has assisted us throughout this past year with fundraising and
donations.
We still
have a large amount of supplies [t/shirts and school supplies] to get to Bali. If you or your friends can assist by taking a bag please contact
me.
