May 2011

My Peduli visit to Bali this time was for part-holiday and part-Peduli.  I enjoyed a week in Ubud with Valerie and Sue and then left them to join Tommy in Sanur and catch up with Tanto.  My diary for my Peduli time follows.

My first visit was to John Fawcett to deliver about 120 Peduli Bears for the cleft palate and cataract children.  Thanks to Alan Buckingham for his donation of labels for the bears and to Valerie for sewing them on.

UBUD

Second visit was to give Robin Lim from Yayasan Bumi Sehat Foundation $2,500.00 which was raised from a Fashion Show held at Ilga Boomsma house in Marc h.   Ilga also gave me Folic Acid Tablets and Multi Testing strips to give to Robin also.   We also had a documentary night here for Robin Lim in February which raised $2,500.00 and we sent up to her $3,000.00. We have given this extra help to Robin this year so that they can keep the clinic in Aceh and Ubud open.  [Valerie  took the $3,000 to the birthing centre earlier this year in February].

If anyone is visiting Bali it is worth going to visit this clinic.  They are always grateful for our support.

A big thank you To Ilga for all your help and support.

While in Ubud we went to the local supermarket and bought 6 large bags full of nappies, toilet rolls and sanitary pads from Peduli donations. The store delivered this to the birthing centre for us.  Little did we realize was that there would be 2 people carrying all these bags on a motorbike it was a sight to see but I forgot the camera!

NEGARA

We visited an orphanage in Negara which is a 3 hour drive from our hotel and we gave all the children a school pack and boxes of food aid. The children have their own band and we all enjoyed a sing-song.  We were impressed at this orphanage as they raise cat fish and also make paving bricks to sell.  They also have chickens which gives them a constant supply of eggs and have their own vegetable garden. It was a long day and we arrived back to the hotel very tired but happy.

SERAYA

Had a great trip to Seraya - first we gave all the children their new caps donated by Alan from Nell Gray Fashions, thank you Alan. We gave a school pack to all the children. We met some of the children who will join our Sponsor-Scholarship Program this year. We gave out food aid to the sponsor children’s’ families from last year.

The young girl at Seraya School with the badly burned and deformed  hand has had treatment and is looking much better.

We went to have a look at a toilet and septic tank system on an adjoining property it is a sample to see how it goes.  If this is a viable project we hope to raise money in the future to install in more homes.

We visited a family that Rose is supporting - the living conditions are very bad we gave them a food aid parcel. They have a 12 month old baby who developed a fever at a few months old and is now disabled and blind. While we were there he was clapping his hands and smiling.  It brought tears to our eyes.

We also visited Putu and his family.  Putu has just finished his exams and has done very well. His mother brought out refreshments for us.

TUMBU

Our next visit was to the Temple in Tumbu where we gave out 120 food parcels to the very poor.  They were also given a t-shirt each.  We met up with Gede and his mum, he is having some skin problems so we gave money for the treatment.

While we were there we met a young girl with a skin problem which she has had since birth.  We hope next trip to get her down to the John Fawcett Foundation for assessment.

GIANYIAR

We went to see the old people and gave them some food aid.  There are still a few of the original people left that we first met when we went there about 9 years ago and it was a great reunion.

DENPASAR

The Biwatour Club brought down 18 children and 13 school teachers to Denpasar.  These children have just finished primary school and will be going on to Junior High School at the end of June.  Some of these children will be sponsored through Peduli Bali. The children and teachers all came down by cars; most of the children were car sick as this was there first time in a car. They visited the Art Museum and we met them when they came to the Inna Grand Bali Beach.  They were given a tour of the Hotel which they enjoyed and after the tour we all went to MacDonald’s in Sanur where we all had a meal of chicken and rice. After lunch they left to go to the Garuda Park in Nusa Dua and then on to Kuta.  They left Kuta about 7:30pm to travel about two and a half hours home.  It was a long day for them but they enjoyed it all.   Biwatour Club has been doing this day out for the year 7 students after their final exams now for a few years.

Peduli Bali maintains a float in Bali to assist families where necessary.  We helped Siwi to buy medication for her father who recently had a stroke.

Our trusted friends Sedana and Tanto were once again able to assist with the purchasing of food aid and school aids for the villages from our donations and this was distributed to 150 families.  Unfortunately, Gusdek and Senny were very busy with ceremonies and were unable to join us this trip.

PROJECTS FOR 2011

Peduli Bali Scholarship Program

We have filled our quota of eleven sponsors for the Scholarship Program 2011/2012.  Three students have already been chosen and Tanto is in the process of assessing a further eight students.

Peduli Bear Project

We still need interested knitters to keep knitting bears as I hope to take another bag full up in August to the John Fawcett Foundation.  We were given a thousand labels and have 850 labels waiting for teddies.

Shoes and Socks

This project is to continue and if anyone would like again to donate $10, as before, for shoes and socks for the children at the Seraya School it would be appreciated.   We found out that one of these students, a six-year-old boy walks three hours to school every day.  Unbelievable.

MORNING TEA FUNDRAISER

It is proposed to hold this early July and we will advise by email.

THANKYOU’S

A big thank you to all those who have donated money, school supplies, baby clothes and toys especially those who knitted and donated teddies.

Special thanks to Garuda Airlines for the extra baggage allowance, and to the Peduli Bali, South Australia and Queensland branches for their continued support and enthusiasm.

And thanks to To St Basils Church and Wembley Primary School for their large donation of school supplies.

Thanks again to the Biwatour staff for making up all the school packs and food parcels.   These people donate their time to do this for us.

To our own families and friends who give us their untiring support, we thank them along with our business associated and also everyone who has assisted with fundraising and donations throughout the year.

We have been donated a large supply of new Tshirts and school supplies and we would greatly appreciate anyone travelling to Bali that would be able to take extra luggage to contact us. Our friend Tanto will pick up from your hotel and store for us until our next trip.

We cannot help everyone in the world but we can make a world of difference to some........

Without all your help and enthusiasm we would not have been able to accomplish any of the above work that we have done since our last visit.
